Terminals and SFTP

Open terminals on your servers in tabs, with an SFTP panel beside each terminal to browse, download and upload the same server’s files.

Where: HF Connect › Hosts › Terminal, or Quick connect with an ssh:// address

Each connection opens in its own tab. The first time you connect to a server, HF Connect shows its key's fingerprint: check it with the server's owner, then click Trust and connect. If a server's key ever changes, you're warned before anything is sent.

  • SFTP (above the terminal) opens the server's files beside the terminal, over the same connection: double-click a folder to open it, a file to download it; Upload, New folder, rename and delete are there too.
  • Open files here opens the server's files in Files, in the folder the terminal is in (when the shell's prompt shows it, as most do; otherwise the SFTP panel's folder or your home folder).
  • Closing a tab ends its connection; a dropped connection shows why in the terminal.

Keyboard and mouse

The terminal works like a desktop terminal. The keys below are the window's; everything else goes to the shell as you type it, so Ctrl+C, Ctrl+D, Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+L, Alt keys, Tab and the arrows behave as always. On a Mac, use ⌘ where the table says Ctrl+Shift (⌘C, ⌘V, ⌘F, ⌘T, ⌘W, ⌘K) and ⌘ for zoom and tab numbers.

Keys What they do
Ctrl+Shift+C, Ctrl+Insert Copy the selected text
Ctrl+Shift+V, Shift+Insert Paste (on Linux a middle-click pastes the text last selected)
Ctrl+Shift+F Find: Enter / Shift+Enter for the next / previous match, Escape closes
Ctrl+Shift+A, Ctrl+Shift+K Select all, clear the screen and scrollback
Ctrl+=, Ctrl+-, Ctrl+0 Larger, smaller, normal text (remembered)
Ctrl+Shift+T, Ctrl+Shift+W New tab to the same host (in the shell's folder, without asking again), close the tab
Ctrl+Tab, Ctrl+Shift+Tab (or Ctrl+PageDown / PageUp) Next / previous tab
Ctrl+1 … Ctrl+8, Ctrl+9 Go to that tab, the last tab
F1 or Ctrl+Shift+/ List these shortcuts (? is typed into the shell)
  • Right-click the terminal for Copy, Paste, Select all, Clear, Find, Open files here and Close tab, and to turn on Copy on select or turn off Ask before pasting several lines.
  • Pasting text with a line break asks first and shows the lines, as the shell would run them at once.
  • Ctrl+click (⌘-click) a web address to open it in your browser.
  • Drag tabs to change their order; a middle-click on a tab closes it; + after the tabs opens another one.

In the window that opens in your browser (macOS, and --browser on Linux), the browser keeps a few keys for itself (⌘W and ⌘T on a Mac, Ctrl+Shift+T / Ctrl+Shift+W / Ctrl+Tab in some browsers): use the tab's ×, the + button, Ctrl+PageDown / PageUp or the right-click menu there. Closing that window with open terminals asks first.
